KING’S Lynn skipper Lewis Kerr believes backing himself more will help him improve next year.

Kerr, who was due to take over the captain’s role for the aborted 2020 season, is set to keep the job when the new season starts in the spring.

He says a lack of confidence in his own ability has held him back apart from the obvious injury problems which have blighted his career.

Now he’s ready for a big push in 2021 with the Minors and Brady Stars as they look for a Premiership play-off push.

He said: “I think over the last few years I have lacked a bit of self-belief but that has changed now.

“I changed my clutch set-up over the winter because I didn’t feel I was gating well on certain tracks like Belle Vue.

“I have tried to analyse meetings in the past but the fact there wasn’t much pressure this year with nobody having much racing helped and I just went in there with an open mind when I rode at Belle Vue.”

Kerr has been reflecting on three meetings at Belle Vue behind closed doors. He raced for an All Stars team against the Aces, the British Final and the Peter Craven Memorial.

“It felt different like we were having a paid practice,” said Kerr. “I am glad that I managed to get in every meeting because Belle Vue is such a fantastic race track.

“It rained at the British Final, but the track was fantastic and it produced some good racing.

“It is such a big stadium so it is just a shame that we couldn’t have any supporters there at the time but hats off to their promotion for putting on the meetings.

“It’s a track I obviously enjoy riding because it is so much fun but I’ve never had a good meeting there, so I really wanted to crack it.

“I have been able to take confidence from this year because I did well at a track I had struggled on in the past. With the riders that I beat, the speed I had, my gating and everything all went well so it does give me a lot of belief for next season.”
