STARS v BIRMINGHAM, PREVIEW

Wednesday April 03, 2024
KING’S Lynn look to finally get their home campaign underway when they host Birmingham in the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership on Thursday (7.30pm).

The PSH Environmental Stars are yet to race on their own track in 2024 thanks to last week’s postponement against Leicester.

They did, though, show plenty of encouraging signs in a narrow defeat in the East Midlands a fortnight ago, and the visit of the Brummies offers an opportunity to put league points on the board.

Birmingham are newcomers to the Premiership in 2024, racing at this level for the first time in a decade, and their rivalry with the Stars is more connected to the late-2000s where both sides were big hitters in the second tier.

Rated as outsiders by many, the Brummies have had some promising performances so far and went close in away matches at Oxford and Ipswich, as well as taking a point after holding champions Sheffield to a home draw before losing the Super Heat.

They had started the season with veteran Scott Nicholls taking a short-term role in the team as they awaited the return from injury of Polish star Piotr Pawlicki, and that switch is due to take place in time for Thursday’s meeting subject to approval.

Nicholls, though, had been in vintage form, whilst other members of the side have shown less consistency.

The Brummies include a newcomer to the UK in Wiktor Lampart, whilst Czech racer Vaclav Milik is back for the first time in nearly a decade having ridden for the Stars in 2015.

Lynn boss Rob Lyon names an unchanged side from the opener at Leicester, which will mean home debuts for skipper Tobiasz Musielak, Benjamin Basso, Vadim Tarasenko and Patryk Wojdylo.

And Musielak says he’s fully focused on the captaincy role and to get the Stars on to a successful run, especially at home.

Musielak said: “Our plan is to get the team back to winning ways this season, because the last few seasons weren’t good for King’s Lynn. We will try to do our best!

“Being captain is one of the biggest honours of course, but my job will be a little bit bigger than normal.

“I don’t know what to expect from myself actually, but I will try to help anyone if I can, and I will try to help my friends in the pits.”

Thursday’s meeting is followed by another home match against Belle Vue next week (April 11), whilst a new date has been agreed for the visit of Leicester.

The Lions will now race at the AFA on Monday July 15, which will actually be their second appearance as they are also due to visit on Thursday May 9.

KING’S LYNN: Tobiasz Musielak, Niels-Kristian Iversen, Michael Palm Toft, Benjamin Basso, Vadim Tarasenko, Patryk Wojdylo, Anders Rowe.
BIRMINGHAM: Vaclav Milik, Wiktor Lampart, Tom Brennan, Steve Worrall, Piotr Pawlicki, Zach Cook, Leon Flint.
