KING'S Lynn Young Stars manager Jason Pipe gives us an update on his team as they prepare for a big match in the NDT at Leicester on Sunday.
The action gets underway at the Hydroscand Arena at 3pm and the boys would love to see you there!
On our side it’s great to see that both Ashton and Max are now fit again to ride after they both had to withdraw from our last meeting at home to Birmingham.
Ashton was involved in a nasty crash at Plymouth in the British Under-21 qualifier the night before, which he wrote a bike off and he had to then rush home back to Hertfordshire and build another bike ready for our meeting the next night. Then in our home meeting he came off on the first bend and got bashed up a bit but insisted he wanted to still race, but that was a mistake and he had to be withdrawn. Ashton deserves some luck to now go his way and hopefully that will be on Sunday.
Max has not had the very best of starts to his Young Stars season, but I’m sure the Max we all know and love will be soon have the luck going his way. What better time for that to happen than from this Sunday. Leicester is a track he knows well, having rode for Leicester in the NDL couple of seasons ago and also back there for them in the NDL this season.
We can’t always really on Jody and Luke getting the big scores and it would be good to see both Ashton and Max taking a little pressure off their shoulders. What can I say about Jody and Luke! Any other team would love these two boys in their teams and they are both a pleasure to work with, along with their fathers as well, who both mechanic for their boys. They show it on track and in the pits at how much they both just love racing. I wouldn’t change these two riders for any others, if someone asked me for a swap! Jody is a great captain and so is Luke. We can only name one on paper, but to me, these two are both captains and leaders of this great team.
Calum Mitchell is still on a high now from our last home meeting and I know he’s really looking forward to Sunday. He knows his job is to collect those third places and anything else would be a bonus. Switching him to No.7 for our last meeting made a big difference, which I thought it would. Calum is now riding with a lot more confidence and is really loving racing Speedway in his debut season.
Harrison is currently finding it very hard in the No.2 position, and he is gaining a lot of experience and learning along the way and I’m sure this will be a big help to him once he then goes down to reserve once the new averages come out. So Harrison has this meeting on Sunday and then the next home meeting on June 25th and I’m sure we’ll see a much better rider in Harrison soon. He is picking up some points as he goes and it won’t be too long before those extra points start coming, whether that’s this season or into next season.
Harrison is brand new to the NDL this year and he’s also gaining track time with the Steelers in the NDL and I’ve told him not to worry too much about scoring points and to just go out and enjoy riding his bike. He and his Dad are picking up little things along the way and Harrison isn’t doing anything wrong at all. I’m happy with how Harrison is starting to adapt to NDL Speedway and he’ll be going into Sunday’s meeting relaxed and no pressure on him.
I’ve managed to get this far and I’ve not even mentioned our Coops yet! There’s a reason for this! Everyone else around the country are having their say on Cooper Rushen at the moment. I just want him to keep his feet on the ground and enjoy riding his bike and hopefully he doesn’t read too much hype about himself and ends up putting too much pressure on himself to do well. He’s a big talent on a bike that’s for sure and I’m just going to let him do his talking on track.
As for Sunday, we all know what William Cairns brings to the table and they have a good leader there. Sonny Springer is impressing me so far this season and I don’t think it will be too long before a Championship club is giving him a team place. He’s certainly making a mockery of his current 5.60 average.
Ace Pijper is a rider who you don’t know what you’re going to get from. Ace on his day can go out and score 12/13 points, but on another day can score only 6/7 points. He’s certainly someone who we need to be very wary of. Then throw in his brother Stene if he’s fit to ride and their guest Mickie Simpson who has had a good start to the season so far and will be covering for Mason Watson on Sunday, that’s a very good top five the Fox Cubs are putting out against us on Sunday.
